The castle Hohenburg was once the most important center of power in this region. But in the year 1707, on the 21th of July, a major fire broke out there and the castle was destroyed.
After the castle was burned down, count Ferdinand Joseph of Herwart had a new castle built southwest of the ruins.
At the same time the castle was built, the architect Matthias Diesel constructed a wonderful baroque garden. Partly you can see the trees of this garden until now. The last nobel owners of the castle had been the grand dukes of Luxembourg. Their last representative at Hohenburg, grand duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg, wanted to place the castle in good hands and sold it to the order of ursulines placed in Landshut. The Ursuline order founded a girls' school in 1953.
Even today girls and boys are still teached in the old roomes of the castle.
After the fire, most of the old castle was demolished, and the stones were used in the construction of St. Jakobus Church in Lenggries and the new castle Hohenburg, that was built 300 meters westward of the old one.
