Natural river paradiese of the Isar 

In 2010, the wild river landscape of the Isar in the Lenggries region, starting from Vorderriss, was named Bavaria’s most beautiful geotope. An extraordinary scenic corridor many envy us for.

Isar - the last big wild river of Germany

The Isar is close to Donau and Main with a complete length of 295 kilometers at the bavarian side, the third tallest Bavarian river and at the same time the last big wild river of Germany.

The source of the Isar is in the Karwendel Mountains. The Isar meadows between Bad Tölz and the Sylvensteinsee are part of the landscape conservation area. Since the Upper Isar is home to many rare plant and animal species, it is essential to protect this unique habitat.

In the past the Isar was a raging river, where the Lenggrieser raftig men did backbreaking work. The rafting men had been the transport contractor for raw materials and all kinds of craft products until diversion channels of the Isar and Rißbach rivers for the Walchensee Hydroelectric Power Plant (1918–1925).
