Local History Museum

The "local history museum" Lenggries, directly situated on the town hall square, depicts in seven exhibition areas, valuable culture-historical objects from the Isarwinkel. In the areas of the permanent exhibition, local history dating back to the first settlement of the Isarwinkel is exhibited in addition to the flora and historical fauna displays.

While the Upper Isar area of Lenggries was settled, during the Early Bronze Age, two fortresses were erected in optimal locations to control access to the Isar valley in the Middle Ages. The museum shows the relationship between the fortresses and the village. From the New Age to the present, important eras of local history, "Antlaßschützen", piety and traditional costumes with objects from 17. to 19. century are exhibited..

From the customs, handicraft, land and alpine dairy farming, the museum path leads the visitor to the of trade of timber rafting, for which Lenggries was known for as it is today. The municipality proudly carries its title as " the village of timber rafting". In addition, the wilderness exhibition offers the visitor the hunt and its negative counterpart, poaching, shown in the permanent exhibition. The tour culminates in the 20. and 21. century with the topics: traffic, tourism and ski sports.

The special exhibition areas provide for a wide variety of themes, thus making for an interesting and informative visit.

Reconstruct the "real Hohenburg"

You have opportunity to reconstruct the "Hohenburg" from the ruins of the fortress in the local history museum. The visitor becomes acquainted with the fortress as it was before the purge in 18. century. During a virtual tour of the ancient Hohenburg scattered remnants of the old fortress complete the picture of the former edifice.

Year of the Bronze Age – "The first inhabitants of Lenggries“

With the unusual special exhibition 2008/2009 the visitor is drawn into the world of the bronze age. How did the first inhabitants of Lenggries live approximately 3500 years ago? The answer to this question offers the Lenggries local history museum in various ways. In a three-dimensional presentation the exhibition depicts life in the pre-historical epoch of the bronze age. The original large reproduction of a bronze time house lets the past become alive. Whether dwelling, food , clothes, jewellery or tools - this and other topics can be viewed in the rooms of the special exhibition..
